1. ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฝ ๐ฎ ๐ก๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฏ๐ผ๐ผ๐ธ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐จ๐ป๐ณ๐ฎ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐ง๐ผ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐ โ remember that NP school prepares you for safe entry-level practice and there is a lot to learn and build upon once you start practicing.
I recommend a minimum of 3 months orientation.
3. ๐๐ผ๐น๐น๐ผ๐ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ ๐ง๐ต๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ด๐ต ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฒ - take note of interesting clinical cases and learn from them - beyond your shift. Track your patients' progress throughout their entire clinical course and learn from the outcomes. This may be as simple as keeping a โMy Patientsโ list in the EMR or a follow-up phone call or records request in the outpatient setting.
4. ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ ๐ข๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐โ ๐ก๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ - complete yet concise documentation is an art that is perfected over time. This important skill can be developed by learning how other providers describe scenarios and exam findings. Read their notes - youโll learn a lot!
5. ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ป ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐ฆ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น๐ถ๐๐๐ - every time you consult a specialist is an opportunity to learn how specialists think and how to improve the quality of future consultations. Whether it be asking for clarification on a phone call with a specialist or following-up on the consultantโs recommendations (or lack thereof), seize the opportunity because it will make you a better provider for your patients.
